Biography
Peter Gregson entered the Royal Navy in 1958 as a cadet at BRNC Dartmouth at the age of 18. On graduation he joined FAA, as helicopter pilot and saw active service in Borneo during Confrontation in 1963. There followed a series of junior sea appointments before he commanded a minesweeper followed by a naval air squadron at RNAS Portland. He then became a student of the RN Staff College at Greenwich before a succession of staff appointments in the MOD, including a return to teach at the Staff College. His final appointment was to command a shore establishment in London, and then retiring in 1989 to become a Queen's Messenger with the FCO. This job he did for seven years, travelling to many parts of the world including Ulan Bator in Outer Mongolia.
On retirement to civilian like in 1997, he joined St John Ambulance as the senior volunteer responsible for the management of the Dorset branck, and became a member of the Board of Visitors (now Independent Monitoring Board) of Dorchester prison, which acts as a watchdog for the Home Secretary. He was appointed High Sheriff of Dorset for the year 1998/99 and was also made a trustee of the Police Partnership Trust. During his time he gained an interest in the magistracy and successfully applied to become one in 2001.
He acquired an interest in local politics and became chairman of his local branch of the Conservative Party in Corscombe, which was followed by an unsuccessful attempt to win the Maiden Newton ward in the 2003 District election. However, success was achieved two years later in the 2005 County Council election when he won the Beaminster Electoral Division against a Liberal Democrat opponent.
